In an age where technology is woven into almost every part of daily life, it’s important to pause and reflect on what’s appropriate in a learning environment. At St Hilda’s, our decision to restrict smart watches is not about resisting innovation, it’s about protecting focus, privacy, and wellbeing.

What is a Smart Watch?

A smart watch has the ability to connect to the internet or mobile networks (via 3G, 4G, or Wi-Fi, etc). This connection may allow it to send and receive messages, access apps, make calls, or interact with social media, often independently of a phone.

Popular examples of smart watches include:

  • Apple Watch

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch

  • Google Pixel Watch

  • Garmin Vivoactive

  • Fitbit Versa (with messaging features)

  • SpaceTalk Kids Watch

Acceptable watches include models such as:

  • Casio Digital Watches

  • Timex Ironman

  • Garmin Vivofit Jr (no connectivity)

  • Simple analog watches

Why Are Smart Watches Not Permitted at St Hilda’s?

The ban on smart watches supports our school’s commitment to creating an environment focused on learning and genuine human connection.

  1. Reducing Distraction: Smart watches can easily become an extension of a smartphone, with notifications, messages, or updates that draw attention away from learning and social interaction.

  2. Protecting Privacy: Some smart watches can record or transmit audio, take photos, or track GPS location. In a school environment, this raises concerns about student and staff privacy and consent.

  3. Supporting Digital Wellbeing: Our digital strategy emphasises helping students develop healthy, mindful relationships with technology. Limiting connected devices during the school day reinforces boundaries and encourages balance.

Encouraging Responsible Technology Use

At St Hilda’s, we believe technology should be used intentionally and not distract from learning. By setting clear guidelines around device use, we help students focus on what matters most: learning, relationships, and self-growth.
